Clos du Roi is a hillside terroir where Pinot Noir vines grow on steep slopes of slightly sandy, clay-limestone marl. It is the heart of the Grand Cru, producing structured and intensely aromatic wines. The estate owns 38 ares planted with vines between 40 and 60 years old, yielding small, highly concentrated, late-ripening berries. Cultivated biodynamically since 2005, the grapes are harvested by hand, then the partially destemmed berries are placed in vats and chilled before indigenous yeasts initiate fermentation. Daily pump-overs are performed initially, followed by manual punch-downs. After 15 to 20 days, the wine is transferred to barrels, with a small amount of new oak, for aging of 14 to 18 months in the 13th-century cellars.
Clos du Roi is undoubtedly the most powerful Corton of the estate, the old vines yielding an intense wine, fragrant with ripe red and black fruits, spices, and licorice. Its fine tannins envelop a palate marked by minerality. A wine built for long aging.
