Collection: Antoine Bouvet
Antoine Bouvet belongs to a generation of winemakers who have profoundly reshaped the way we look at Champagne. For more than a decade, he has been building a highly personal range in Avenay-Val-d’Or, guided by a single idea: to intervene as little as possible and allow the vines, grape varieties and places to speak for themselves.
The story began in the 1970s with his grandfather, Guy Bouvet, who established the estate around parcels located in Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, three Premier Cru terroirs in the Vallée de la Marne. Antoine began learning alongside him at a very young age before taking over the estate in 2013. This sense of transmission remains deeply present in his work, right down to the labels on his bottles.
Old vines and massal selections now form an essential part of this heritage. Some parcels were planted in the 1960s, and many of the vines are over forty years old. Antoine works them with particular attention to the soils and the life surrounding them. When we visited in 2023, he had just welcomed his first Kunekune pigs, which spend the winter naturally maintaining the vineyard rows.
In the cellar, Antoine works each parcel separately and favours ageing in barrels. This approach allows him to explore different expressions of his terroirs: Blanc de Noirs, saignée rosé, multi-vintage blends and Coteaux Champenois. Les Fleurs du Silence, built around a perpetual reserve started in 2015, is a particularly striking illustration of his exploration of time and blending.
We have been following Antoine Bouvet’s work for nearly ten years. What struck us during our visit remains what draws us to his wines today: still wines of remarkable clarity and precision, sometimes surprisingly close in texture and energy to some of the great white wines of the Jura, followed by Champagnes that combine vinous depth, tension and generosity.
From one parcel to another and from one cuvée to the next, the expressions change, yet the same signature remains. For us, it is this consistency, as much as the diversity of his wines, that makes Antoine Bouvet one of the most interesting winemakers of his generation in Champagne.
