Collection: Timothy Stroebel
In Villers-Allerand, on the Montagne de Reims, Timothée Stroebel works a vineyard where the soils sometimes change within a few dozen meters. Deep clays, sands, chalk: this diversity gives Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay very different expressions. It is within these nuances that Stroebel has been building the identity of his estate for over twenty years.
When he returned from Beaune and took over the family vines in 2001, Timothée Stroebel did not seek to reproduce the Champagne model surrounding him. He wanted to understand what his plots truly had to say. He brought life back to the soils, preserved his old Meunier vines rather than succumbing to the logic of yield, and gradually pushed his grapes towards more assertive ripeness. This approach, where the fruit regains its fleshiness and the wine takes precedence, naturally led him to blur the line between Champagne and Coteaux Champenois.
But what fascinates us about Stroebel goes far beyond the sole question of Champagne.
Coteaux Champenois plays a central role in his understanding of Villers-Allerand. He has been producing them since his first vinifications, both red and white, and does not hesitate to push ripeness much further to give the grapes the necessary time and substance. Without effervescence, the terroir reveals itself differently. The fruit gains in depth, textures assert themselves, and the differences between grape varieties, soils, and plots become more evident. These still wines are not a parallel activity: they directly inform his interpretation of the vineyard and, in turn, illuminate the profoundly vinous personality of his Champagnes.
This research continues in the cellar without a fixed protocol. Stroebel tastes, observes, and adapts his vinifications to the vintage and to what each plot gives him. Wood accompanies the aging, fermentations are spontaneous, and interventions remain limited. A free approach, but never detached from the place.
The name Heraclitus, chosen for several of his cuvées, ultimately says a lot about this approach. Nothing is immutable. A vine evolves, a vintage shifts balances, and the same terroir never tells exactly the same story.
Timothée Stroebel's wines have this depth and freedom. Vinous, textured Champagnes, sometimes powerful but always driven by remarkable energy. Coteaux that seek out the flesh, the ripeness, and the most direct expression of the fruit.
A singular vision of Champagne, where the bubble is never an end in itself, but one of the possible expressions of a great wine terroir.
