At the foot of the Château-Chalon cliff, Sous Roche grows on a slope of grey Lias marl, partly covered with limestone scree. These marls split into thin layers, between which the roots find their way and draw on the soil’s water reserves. Here, on this southwest-facing terroir, François Rousset-Martin tends a small parcel of old Chardonnay vines.
The 2023 vintage reveals its full depth. Ripe fruit gives the wine a generous body and broad, fleshy texture that unfolds gradually. Ageing with regular topping up supports this expression of place, allowing the Chardonnay to reveal its texture and definition.
On the palate, density meets vibrant acidity. The wine gains breadth while maintaining a precise sense of direction; freshness runs through it, carrying it into a particularly persistent finish. This meeting of richness and tension gives Sous Roche its distinctive presence.
A Chardonnay of depth, in which the power of the vintage finds its balance in the wine’s energy.
